There are a few factors that enhance the progress for women in the military, as well as ones that inhibit progress. One of the enhancement factors are using other countries as examples. For instance as Bongiovi (2015) stated that there were "nearly one million women serving inair defense, combat aviation, sniper, partisan and tank units both commanding units and being highly decorated for their achievements and heroism" in the Soviet Union. Also, Israel has a large number of women including those in combat which is nearly a third of their total force (p. 229). Also, a number of NATO allies, Australia, New Zealand and Canada allow women to serve unrestricted. Other factors that enhance the progress is the "response to personnel needs, changing social norms, and proven performance on and off the battlefield" (Bongiovi, 2015, p. 228).
